Balancing the Heart Chakra: A Path to Emotional Healing

In the intricate tapestry of the human body's energy system, the heart chakra stands out as a vibrant hub of love, compassion, and emotional balance.

Nestled in the centre of the chest, the heart chakra, also known as Anahata in Sanskrit, radiates energy that governs our ability to give and receive love, experience joy, and form deep, meaningful connections with others.

Unblocking and balancing this energetic centre can be a profound step toward achieving a harmonious and loving life.

The heart chakra is associated with the colours green and pink and is linked to the element air. It is our centre for compassion, forgiveness, and emotional resilience.

When in balance, this chakra allows us to connect with others with authenticity and empathy. However, various factors can contribute to an imbalance or blockage of the heart chakra, hindering its optimal functioning.

Symptoms of a Blocked or Unbalanced Heart Chakra:

  • Emotional Instability: A diminished sense of emotional stability and overwhelming feelings may indicate an imbalance in the heart chakra.
  • Difficulty in Relationships: Struggles in forming or maintaining healthy relationships and a constant state of emotional isolation.
  • Lack of Empathy: A feeling of detachment or indifference towards others' emotions and experiences.
  • Inability to Forgive: Difficulty in letting go of past hurts and holding onto grudges.

Physical Symptoms

The heart chakra is closely linked to the lungs and respiratory system; therefore, imbalances can manifest as respiratory problems such as asthma or bronchitis. You may also experience heart-related issues, fatigue, and immune system deficiencies.

What Causes an Unbalanced Heart Chakra?

The heart chakra may become imbalanced for many reasons including, but not exclusively:

  • Negative Experiences: Past experiences, especially those involving heartbreak, rejection, or betrayal, can create blockages in the heart chakra.
  • Fear and Anxiety: Constant worry and fear about emotional vulnerability can disrupt the flow of energy in the heart chakra, leading to imbalances.
  • Unhealthy Lifestyle: Poor diet, lack of exercise, and inadequate self-care can negatively impact the heart chakra.
  • Suppressed Emotions: Avoiding or suppressing emotions, such as sadness or grief, can contribute to the blockage of the heart chakra.

Using Gemstones to Heal the Heart Chakra:

When looking for gemstones which work with the heart chakra, you are generally looking for ones which are green or pink in color. For example:

  1. Green Aventurine: Helping to open up this chakra and allowing greater access to one’s capacity for love, green aventurine helps to increase compassion and emotional healing.
  2. Rose Quartz: A vibrant crystal known for its powerful heart-healing properties. Boosting love, enhancing compassion, and promoting emotional clarity, rose quartz helps release negative emotions and supports emotional growth.
  3. Jade: Promoting tranquility, emotional balance, and wisdom, jade also acts as a protective shield, channeling visions of peace and promoting love and harmony.

Others include:

Malachite, Rhodonite, Amazonite, Green Calcite...

How to Use the Gemstones:

  • Meditate on them: You can place the stone on your heart chakra. This will help in focusing the energy of the crystal and offer an improved healing experience. Or you can even simply hold the stone while you are meditating.
  • Place crystals in your pocket or purse; or under your pillow while you sleep.
  • If you wish to keep the energies of your heart chakra stones in your auric field all the time, wear them as a piece of jewelry. For pieces that would work with the heart chakra click/shop HERE.

Use of Essential Oils:

There are a number of ways to use essential oils for chakra healing:

  1. Diffuse in the air by use of an essential oil diffuser, or burn a candle which has been infused with grounding essential oils.
  2. Apply to the body: Essential oils can be applied neat to the soles of the feet, or dilute in an appropriate carrier oil and apply to the body. A good blend to help stimulate your heart chakra is 12 drops pine, 12 drops rosewood and 2 drops neroli in 10ml of carrier oil.
  3. For an instant "hit" simply inhale directly from the bottle.
  4. Put a few drops of your chosen oil on your pillow at night.

Oils that work well with the heart chakra include:

Rose, Rosewood, Geranium, Lavender, Ylang-Ylang, Bergamot, Jasmine...

Other Ways to Open and Heal Your Heart Chakra:

  • Meditate/visualisation Try this simple meditation:
  1.  Find a comfortable position to sit or lie down. Make sure your spine is straight and that you’re not hunched over.
  2. Place your left hand over your Heart, with your palm facing up. Rest your right hand on top of your left hand.
  3. Close your eyes and take a few deep, cleansing breaths. Now begin to visualize yourself breathing through your Heart. As you inhale, feel the breath traveling in the body through your Heart and as you exhale, feel it going out through the Heart.
  4. Repeat the following mantra to yourself: “I am love.” And expand on the feeling of just being pure love inside your heart centre.
  5. Continue to breathe deeply and focus on expanding love. Stay in this meditative state for as long as you feel comfortable.
  6. When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes and return to your normal state of consciousness.
  • Affirmations:*Repeating positive affirmations can help balance the Heart Chakra. Examples include: "I am open to giving and receiving love," "I forgive myself and others," "I am connected to all living beings," "I am filled with compassion and love..."
  • The heart chakra is highly influenced by the element of air. Engaging in deep breathing exercises, spending time in nature, and practicing loving-kindness meditation can activate the air element within you. Observe the wind, watch the clouds, and connect with the energy of the air.
  • Physical Activity, in particular yoga which works on balancing all the chakras. Engage in yoga poses that specifically target the heart chakra, such as camel pose or cobra pose. Regular exercise helps to release pent-up energy and encourages a healthy flow of chi through the chakras.
  • Journaling: Writing about your emotions, fears, and desires can help to release pent-up feelings and work through your emotions.
  • Therapy: Counseling/therapy can help to address past traumas and emotional issues thus removing blockages.
