A bit about Labradorite.... - Arborvitae Designs

A bit about Labradorite....

Yesterday I was out at an in person fayre for the first time since the covid outbreak in March 2020.. It felt so lovely to be back out there and being face to face with customers again. I had forgotten how much I love meeting and talking to like minded people who share a passion for gemstones..

At the event, a lovely lady purchased my Labradorite sun pendant. It was a particular favourite of mine, so while it was hard to part with I am so happy that it is going to such a fabulous home.. This lady wanted to know some more about Labradorite, so I thought I would do some research....

Where is it found?

Labradorite is a member of the calcium enriched Feldspar family of gemstones, which includes Moonstone, Amazonite and Sunstone among others. It was first discovered on Paul's Island, Labrador, which is an eastern province of Canada, hence where it got it's name. Labradorite can also be found in other locations globally, including Poland, Norway and the US.

How is it formed?

Labradorite is created when heat and pressure melt and mix various rocks and minerals. As the newly mixed materials slowly cool, the minerals separate into layers and this now, igneous rock, hardens with several inclusions. It is the layers that will later give the gemstone its shimmering colour play, or schillar.

What is "Labradorescence"?

The uniqueness of the apparent colour changing properties of Labradorite make it very popular in pieces of jewellery, carvings, etc. The schillar or "labradorescence" reveals itself as the piece moves in the light meaning that what might initially appear to be dull grey piece of Labradorite, by just turning it slightly so it catches the light, a stunning rainbow of colours can be revealed.

 What about metaphysical properties?

A deeply spiritual and protective stone, Labradorite deflects unwanted energies from the aura and prevents energy leakage. It is a bringer of light, raising the consciousness and connecting with universal energies.

Labradorite banishes fears and insecurities, clearing the psychic debris of previous disappointments and removing projections from others, or from yourself, setting you free. This beautiful stone strengthens your faith in yourself and encourages you to trust in the universe, making it a useful companion through periods of change in your life.
